it is necessary to be hungry in this life. to hunger for something outside ourselves; for many it is a career, their partner, their family, the search for truth, the need to explore. hunger for that which makes us feel whole.
very basic hunger is the need to stay alive, to feed our bodies, but human hunger goes beyond that, it is a need to do something with ourselves that has meaning beyond our physical bodies. hunger is needed in the quest for knowledge, in the attainment of physical strength, in the fulfillment of our every day tasks. we are otherwise condemned to simply perform at a level just necessary, just enough, to be considered viable. hunger is what makes us live. the hunger for new experiences, for new horizons for new emotions. we seek to fulfill this hunger.
paradoxically it is the want for what we already have that will also keep us happy. the NEED for nothing more than what we have at hand. is that enough? never, of course. we always seek more, it is our need as humans. we are not however to seek more than what we have as far as material things. this hunger will leave us empty in both pocket book and soul. that hunger must be suppressed, that hunger must not be fed. material things are tools necessary on the pursuit of our goals, but goals themselves. material wealth is not something to aspire to, as much as we are driven by it in our daily lives, but rather a possible result of our striving for improvement. in that sense material wealth is not an indicator of success, but an indicator of society’s measure of success.
